DAN SHOUT (Keys / Sax / Vocals)
Dan was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, in 1981 and was “introduced” to Juluka as a toddler when his father brought home a copy of ‘Woza Friday’. From this time onwards Johnny Clegg’s music was never very distant as it was a constant “guest” in the family home.
Moving with his family to Oranjemund in Namibia, Dan attended the local junior school, and with the constant encouragement and support of his parents, continued lessons on recorder and piano before taking up the clarinet. He attended high school as a boarder at SACS in Cape Town and was introduced to the saxophone, ultimately leading the school’s jazz band in his final year. During these years he continued to be inspired by his occasional gigs with his father’s amateur rock band in Namibia.
After matriculating, Dan completed a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance at the University of Cape Town, before going on to complete his Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at the end of 2005. He has travelled extensively as a member of various representative South African jazz groups. The highlights have been performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland in 2004 and at the annual conference of the International Association of Jazz Educators in Los Angeles in 2005.
Dan’s skills playing live saxophone with House DJ’s also took him to Dubai twice in 2005. Back in Cape Town, where he presently lives, he is a regular participant in rock and pop tribute shows, as well as various function bands and has appeared at most of South Africa’s top music festivals. His own jazz band, Gravity, performs regularly on the South African jazz circuit.
In his spare time Dan is an avid rugby follower (WP/Stormers/Bokke!) and looks forward to his return trips to the Namib desert whenever time allows.
