DAN SHOUT (Keys / Sax / Vocals)
Dan Shout is a freelance saxophonist and keyboardist based in Cape Town, South Africa. Dan studied clarinet, piano and saxophone at South African College School (SACS) from where he matriculated in 1998.
Shout commenced his studies in classical clarinet and jazz saxophone at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town in 1999. While he read his Bachelors of Music he performed with Five of a Kind Jazz Quintet, U.C.T. Big Band, Mike Campbell Big Band, The Cape Town Jazz Orchestra, the Standard Bank South African National Youth Bands (2002-2005), Mike McCullagh, The Spier Summer Orchestra, Darryl Andrews Band, VJR Big Band and Cape Town funk phenomenon, Golliwog. With Golliwog Dan performed at some South Africa’s top festivals, including Oppi Koppi, Splashy Fen, Tuks Festival, Flux Festival and the Cape Town North Sea Jazz Festival.
Dan graduated his Bachelor of Music degree and took a permanent teaching post at his alma mater, SACS high school for 2 years before returning to U.C.T. full time to read his Masters degree in Jazz Performance and Jazz Analysis.
After completing his Masters Degree in June 2006 graduating Cum Laude, Shout auditioned and was subsequently awarded the post of alto and soprano saxophones and keyboard in Johnny Clegg’s band.
Dan has performed in Europe, Scandinavia, North America, North Africa, Southern Africa, the Middle East, Seychelles, West Indies and Australasia. Some of his highlights have included performing at the South African National Youth Jazz Band at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague (2004) and with the Johnny Clegg band at the 2006 Soccer World Cup in Germany, the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, Nelson Mandela's 46664 Concert at Ellis Park (2007), Festival Rhythm Africaine in Bastille, Paris for Bastille Day, (2007) and Festival Paleo in Nyon, Switzerland (2010).
Dan has established himself as one of the stalwarts of the South African House Music scene having played at almost every major House club in Cape Town and Johannesburg such as Bang Bang Club, Fez, Hemisphere, Ignite, Delux and Carfax to name a few. Shout regularly performs with South Africa’s hottest House DJ’s such as Shaun Duvet, 5fm’s DJ Fresh and Roger Goode, Craig de Sousa, Dino Moran and Leighton Moody to name a few. House Music has also taken Dan to Dubai's hottest House clubs where he has performed several times.
When not touring with Clegg, Dan is working on two other permanent projects. Dan released his debut Jazz-Fusion album entitled “Greetings & Salutations” in June, 2010 featuring original compositions and various friends and colleagues from bands in years gone by. Secondly, Dan plays with Craig de Sousa, Nick Matthews , Mel Scholtz, Gorm Helfjord and Ricardo Moretti in Magic Carpet Ride, an Acid-Jazz group. Magic Carpet Ride are set to release their album in summer 2010/11.
Dan teaches a handful of saxophone students at the University of Cape Town and is occasionally presents workshops at Jazz conferences and music shops.
